History of the lumber industry of America James Elliott Defebaugh 9781171508045 Books

"History of the Lumber Industry of America," by James Elliot Defebaugh, Vol 1, Forgotten Books, Lexington, KY (reprint of the 1906 volume by The American Lumberman, Chicago). This 559-page paperback is the standard reference volume of the lumber industry. Chapters cover the forests and lumber products of the state and territories of the US and Canada as well as statistics for lumber production and exports based on census reports for the period 1820 to 1900. Data are reported by state, product, species harvested, value, number of mills, number of employees, wages paid, capital, etc. The data trace the western movement of the lumber industry as trees were harvested and cities were built further west

The book begins with a brief history of discovery, exploration, and settlement of the North American colonies. The second chapter reviews the lumber species harvested in America and their range. The book makes clear that natural growth forests are not pure. The finest white pine stands in New York are found west of the Hudson in the southern tier of counties near the Pennsylvania border. White pines are found in the Adirondacks, but those are mixed forests. Chapter III to XXIII covers the forests of Canada. The remaining chapters (to XXXI) review US forest resources, public land laws, forest reserves, tariffs, forest products productions statistics, and exports.

This is a reference volume with a rather terse style, but it does contain much information on the forests of the US, the lumber industry of the nineteenth century, and numerous data tables. The book lacks an index.
