Joe Horlen was a good old Texas boy who became a better-than-decent pitcher for the Chicago White Sox in the Sixties — kept ’em in a few pennant races, put up some stellar ERAs, threw a no-hitter, and would have won a bunch more games if his teammates could’ve hit a lick. He also played a pivotal role in empowering the players’ union and creating free agency. (And he could smack around a golf ball pretty well.) You could make a case that Horlen was an underrated player, but this engaging book goes a long way to correcting that. It’s a richly detailed, lovingly told biography, filled with gracefully unspooled baseball yarns about Joe and all the great players from those days, dry humor, wonderful old photos, the occasional pitching tip, and more than a few twists and turns. As Joe himself says, in perfect Yogi-esque style, “You can never tell when anything will happen.” A good, breezy read.Product details

Mr. McCartha has done a wonderful job telling the life story of one of the cornerstones of the early-'60s White Sox. Reading "Texas Heat," you can appreciate the dozens -- hundreds? -- of interviews and hours of research that went into this project. Even older White Sox fans will learn a thing or two about Horlen. This is nice book, and will make for excellent summertime reading.

Great read about one of baseball's all time great players. The author clearly spent much time and effort researching his subject and then presenting his story in an entertaining and interesting way. I hope someday to see this story on the big screen.
This brought back memories being a White Sox fan for over 65 yrs. Joe was one of my favorites and do remember listening to Joe Horlen's no hitter. The author did a fabulous job writing this book. Thank you for bringing back memories.
Must agree with the other reviewers. Very well written and organized biography of a very remarkable under appreciated pitcher who won championships in PONY league, college and major league ball. The book is such a pleasant and quick read. McCartha did an extraordinary job delivering a compelling story. The book is refreshing. No redundancies. No fluff. Great read!!!
Texas Heat, Chicago Fire is a quick read yet a comprehensive biography of the professional and personal life of White Sox pitcher Joe Horlen. I do and will recommend this book to baseball enthusiasts (young and old), the sports minded, book clubs, and my girlfriends because this is a book for all readers. McCartha details Horlen’s statistics and games from his younger days of playing baseball to the 1972 World Series championship. Recalling events with other players, an insiders experience with management, negotiating pay during pre-free agent days, Horlen’s role representing players and more are told with admiration. I enjoyed reading about Mr. Horlen’s personal life from childhood to the present. Disappointments as well as the joys remind us living can be celebrated. No mulligans, indeed.
